Schlafly Bottleworks, 7260 Southwest Ave, St. Louis, MO 63143, USA
About the event
Geo-Institute St. Louis Chapter is excited to host our quarterly technical meetup at Schlafly Bottleworks!
Join us for an in-depth technical session featuring Dale Miller, P.E, as he explores the complexities of landslide remediation and the engineering precision required for stabilization using drilled shaft designs.
Landslides present unique challenges that require a seamless integration of field data, laboratory testing, and advanced modeling. This presentation will walk through the lifecycle of a stabilization project, from initial reconnaissance to construction observation.
Key Topics Include:
Data Acquisition: Strategies for field reconnaissance and subsurface exploration.
Parameter Development: Translating laboratory results into reliable design parameters.
Stability Modeling: Critical considerations for building accurate slope stability models.
Drilled Shaft Analysis: Detailed design methodologies for stabilization.
Constructability: Practical insights from the field to bridge the gap between design and implementation.

Meet the Speaker
Senior Geotechnical Engineer & Technical Lead
Dale is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer at Shannon & Wilson’s (SW) in St. Louis, where he has dedicated the last 11 years to advancing geotechnical practice. As the Technical Lead and Supervisor for the St. Louis geotechnical laboratory, he brings a rigorous, data-driven approach to every project.
Education & Expertise:
M.S. in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical) – Virginia Tech (2014)
B.S. in Geological Engineering – Missouri University of Science and Technology (2012)
Dale specializes in the development of geotechnical investigations for residential, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure sectors. His deep technical toolkit includes slope stability analysis, deep foundation design, settlement analysis, and seepage modeling.
Dale's extensive field experience with drilled shaft construction observation provides a unique perspective, ensuring that stabilization designs are not only theoretically sound but practically buildable."
