Job Description
Great Rivers Greenway, your regional parks and trails district, is seeking two (2) interns to perform field visits throughout the jurisdiction and evaluate pavement condition and collect data. This position will evaluate pavement using the PASER (Pavement Surface Evaluation Rating) method, record observations, collect measurements and photographs throughout St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County under the direction of the Greenway Operations Manager.
The seasonal Civil Engineering Intern will work full time (30-40 hours/ week) from approximately June through August 2025.
Starting rate is $17.00 per hour. There are no benefits provided.
Essential Functions
Works with Greenway Operations Manager to perform inspections including:
Learning the PASER method of pavement evaluations
Develop a daily/weekly schedule for making field visits via personal vehicle and GRG provided bicycles
Using GIS asset inventory to locate greenways in the field for evaluations
Evaluate condition of asphalt and concrete surfaces using the PASER method
Record observations and evaluations in tablets
Identify additional issues or observations while in the field
Work may also include other asset data collection and analysis
Acts as a Great Rivers Greenway ambassador while in the field where interaction with the public is likely. Provides information about greenways and the organization to the public in a friendly and courteous manner.
Consistently demonstrates a climate of courtesy, respect and professionalism to staff, partners, volunteers and the general public.
May be called upon to support greenway operations, maintenance and/or special events during the summer where applicable.
Position Qualification Requirements
Skills and Knowledge:
Enrollment in an accredited civil engineering or related field required
Minimum of two years of undergraduate course work preferred
Basic knowledge of engineering fundamentals
Ideal coursework includes: civil engineering, asphalt, concrete, soils, foundation and surveying
Proficiency in MS Office suite of programs required
Proficiency in GIS mapping, especially mobile based applications preferred
Experience with PASER is ideal but not required
Excellent communication skills
Ability to work independently to achieve a goal during tenure in the position
License(s)/Certification(s) Required:
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
US citizen or lawfully authorized to work in the United States.
Physical/Visual Activities or Demands:
Must be able to work in the outdoors in uncomfortable conditions. Exposure to environmental hazards such as extreme temperatures, biting insects, and poisonous plants is likely.
Additional Requirements:
Must provide reliable, daily transportation to office and field locations throughout the jurisdiction of Great Rivers Greenway. Mileage reimbursement for field travel will be available at federal standard rate.
Ability to transport a GRG-provided bicycle to Greenways or willingness to utilize one’s own bicycle.
Ability to work days, evenings and weekends as needed.
